Abstrak/Abstract River water quality monitoring as part of water pollition control program has been conducted routinely since early 1990s. However, there are problems faced related to data quality assurance for water quality data analysis. This problem potentially becomes source of the problem in river ecology improvement program. This research is aimed at systematically identify handicaps and shortfalls in the current procedure of water quality monitoring; from the pre sampling, field sampling, processing, and post sampling analysis. Each step of the procedure is tested for its reliability and validity. Pollution index (PI) is used to to show the difference in the conclusion of water quality status if no proper evaluation of the quality of the data is conducted. Secondary data from Prokasih at Gadjah Wong Stream is used as a sample in this research. The result of the PI application indicated the significant difference of water quality status at Gadjah Wong stream if no improvement is taken in the strategy of water quality monitoring. There are problems imbedded in the procedure, such as missing value because of inconsistency of the number of parameters collected, sampling frequency, monitoring location; outlier, undetected/censored data and others. Data validity analysis can reduce the systematic error in the selection of method and analysis of data.
