Abstrak/Abstract The bundengan musical instrument has been dubbed as the one-man gamelan because it allows a single musician to imitate the sound of the gamelan orchestra. Among the various sound elements in the bundengan are the bamboo bars embedded within the shell-shaped resonator. By plucking these bars, the musician can generate a sound that is very similar in timbre with the sound of leather drums. These bamboo bars are interesting to study: they have different sizes, they have slightly curved shapes, and they are installed with a unique method, i.e. they are inserted in the woven bamboo splits that make the wall of the bundengan resonator. We have characterized the vibration of the bundengan's bamboo bars by finding their natural frequencies and mode shapes. The method used in this study is modal analysis simulation using ABAQUS, a finite element analysis software. The simulation is done by varying the length, width, shape, and curvature of the bundengan bamboo bars. The simulation results show that the significant change of natural frequency in the model is influenced by the reduction of the thickness and the length of the insertion in the kowangan. Our data indicate that the process of thinning and adjusting the insertion of the bundengan bamboo bars in the kowangan is an engineering process to tune their natural frequencies.
