| Abstrak/Abstract | Van der Wijck Irrigation channel was constructed in 1899 or slightly later in 1909 during the Dutch colonial. The channel was named after a famous Governor General of the East Indies Carel Herman Aart Van der Wijck (17 October 1893-3 October 1899). It was most likely that he ordered the design of the channel and started the construction. No exact date of its construction and whose idea was the channel at the first place was available. From the engineering point of view, it seems that the irrigation channel was designed and constructed with a much bigger idea that is the Mataram irrigation channel as the main channel although the Mataram irrigation channel was constructed more than 40 years later. The King of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX continued the successful of the Wijck channel and ordered the construction of Mataram Channel which finally connect the Progo River and Opak. The irrigation channel has been very useful for watering sugarcane field during the Dutch Colonial. The Van der Wijck channel although only approximately 17 km in length was an engineering as well as an art work. Today Van der Wijck channel is still in operation and irrigates paddy and sugarcane fields. The study of the Wijk Irrigation channel including the effectiveness of the channel for irrigation has led to a conclusion that the channel is successful in term of design, constructions as well as usefulness. The channel has become a hydraulic environmentally friendly engineering as well as lovely heritage that attract local tourists for Yogyakarta province. © Proceeding of the 21st LAHR-APD Congress 2018.
