Integrated approach to urban design and the ways of identifying more sustainable urban spaces and forms has got widen attention. Environmental sustainability is only one facet of the concept of sustainability, as there are five facets of sustainability. The five interrelated facets are the environmental sustainability which aims at ecological balance, the cultural sustainability which aims at cultural continuity, the economic sustainability which aims at economic performance, the social sustainability which aims at institutionalcapacity, and management sustainability which aims at viable government. The case of Asmat Regency Capital Masterplan would show how urban design should not only accommodating formal aesthetics nor natural sustainability, but also would act as frames of development, which will integrating all facets of sustainability. The cultural sustainability will acknowledge the diversity and uniqueness of each tangible and intangible cultural asset. Together with the environment sustainability and economic sustainability concepts, both natural and cultural resources will be treated as valuable assets tobe developed, conserved, and utilized. On the other hand, the social and management sustainability concepts will ensure the effective policy, regulation, and accountability, while the institutional capacity should meet the needs of community, public, and private entities. The concept will also require balance between conservation and development, spatially, sectorally, and communally. The paper would discuss furtherseveral efforts to develop the human interaction spaces for the community, based on a very specific and unique existing resources and conditions, while considering local principles shared by the communitymembers. |
