Indonesia is characterized with all sorts of historic living spaces: more than 17.508 islands, approx. 260 millions people, more than 300 regional, languages, extraordinary collections of natural & cultural heritage, more than 6,500 rivers -10 rivers length between 350 km – 1,143 km (Kapuas River. In the case of Yogyakarta heritage city has Saptasindhavah. There are 7 (sapta) river (sindhu) –rivers (sindhawah): 1) Praga, 2) Běḍog, 3) Winanga, 4) Code, 5) Gajah Wong, 6) Tambak Baya, 7) Opak-Oya.
This city is the capital of the Yogyakarta Special Province. Founded as a capital Kingdom in 1755 by Mangkubumi Prince or Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, the first King of Kraton Yogyakarta. Three important rivers in the establishment of Kingdoms are 1) Winanga, 2) Code, 3) Gajah Wong. This royal environment could be stated as heritage saujana (cultural landscape) where the inextricable unity between nature and man-made heritage in space and time (Charta of Indonesian Heritage Conservation 2003).
Within the last 2 decade there have been the Indonesian heritage community and river restoration movement. The river is important in the development of Indonesian culture. The river is a guide to cultural movement in the archipelago. Through the river, non-local culture received by the people of the archipelago.
Each river has its own characteristics and a specific way of adaptation (Nayati, 2020).
This presentation will exploore more on the case of Yogyakarta heritage city those movement relate to the Saptasindavah mythology and cosmology,
