Nostoc commune is an edible terrestrial or freshwater cyanobacterium and had been served as
one of single cell protein for the people around Gunungkidul and its surrounding in the past. They
named it ‘Jamur Selo’. However, this several last decades, N. commune was neglected and has
been unknown by the people. Because the N. commune would bring a great economic value for
the community and would contribute in the food security as one of single cell protein in Indonesia,
an ethnobotany and taxonomy study had been conducted. This research was the first research
from a series of research on N. commune from Gunungkidul. A field survey sampling as well as
interviewed some group of people and laboratory research were included in the research method.
Characterization of morphological structure of the cell composting the trichomes of N. commune
was conducted with student light microscope, phase-contras light microscope, and stereo light
microscope by squash method. In Java, N. commune is endemic at the limestone area and forms
green-brownish jelly-like clumps or wad on soil or among grasses, during the raining season. However, in the absent of raining, the clumps becomes blackish crackers mat on the surface of
soil. A detail description of the morphological character of N. commune is presented in the article. |
