Objective: This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness of mobile health (mHealth) applications in improving care for individuals with schizophrenia, focusing on their potential to improve medication adherence, symptom management, and patient engagement.
Methods: A comprehensive search of Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science was conducted, applying inclusion criteria to original research articles on mHealth interventions for schizophrenia. A total of 16 studies met the criteria, with interventions ranging from reminder-based adherence aids to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychoeducational tools. Studies were evaluated for quality and risk of bias using the CASP checklist for RCTs.
Results: mHealth interventions demonstrated varying success. Reminder-based apps generally improved medication adherence, particularly in resource-limited settings, although adherence benefits diminished over time without additional support. Apps incorporating CBT and symptom tracking showed promise for symptom management, reducing depressive and psychotic symptoms, and improving self-efficacy. High user engagement was observed with psychoeducational features, although some apps faced challenges to maintain long-term engagement.
Conclusion: mHealth applications have significant potential as supplementary tools in schizophrenia care, particularly when they include a combination of adherence support, symptom management, and psychoeducation. However, maintaining engagement and ensuring broad accessibility remain challenges. Future research should focus on multi-featured interventions tailored to user needs to enhance clinical effectiveness and feasibility for widespread use.
