Abstrak/Abstract Abstract Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of periodontal tissue which has a link with various systemicdiseases including cancer. Chronic inflammation has been considered as one of the predisposing factors for cancer. Periodontitis has also been associated with an increased risk of cancer incidence and mortality. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and as the second cause for cancer related death in women. Breast cancer is also one of the cancers that has been reported to have an association with periodontitis. Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) or also called collagenase-2 is MMP which is mainly produced by neutrophils and is associated with various inflammatory conditions. MMP-8 is the most competent proteinase to degrade extracellular matrix and type I collagen related to periodontal tissue damage. MMP-8 can be detected in the oral fluid such as saliva, gingival crevicular fluid, or peri-implant fluid. With regard to cancer, an increase in MMP-8 levels is reported to have implications for metastasis and the survival time of cancer patient. However, the association between salivary MMP-8 and the cancer condition has remained unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity of active MMP-8 detected in saliva as a diagnostic tool for periodontitis in cancer patients and to explore the potential of salivary active MMP-8 as a biomarker of breast cancer. This initial study was planned to involve around 50 patients diagnosed with breast cancer at Dr. RSUP Sardjito hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The presence of active MMP-8 in saliva will be detected by MMP-8 chairside test and the patient’s periodontal status will be examined. The presence of MMP-8 in cancerous tissue of patients will be analysed by immunohistochemical methods and the serum MMP-8 by ELISA method. MMP-8 detected and periodontal status will be analysed and compared with clinicopathological data of cancer patients.
