Introduction: Indonesia has the highest prevalence of smoking in the Southeast Asia Region, estimated at 62.9% among men and 4.8% among women in 2018. In 2014, the government of Indonesia required the inclusion of Pictorial Health Warning (PHW) which must be printed on cigarette packaging. The study aimed to measure the effectiveness of PHWs on intention to quit smoking.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 175 respondents aged 15-60 selected randomly from a sampling frame provided by Sleman HDSS. The dependent variables were intention to quit smoking. The main independent variable in this study was the exposure of PHWs, while other variables were also considered such as demographics, duration of smoking, age at first time smoking, advertisement exposure and belief of tobacco illness. Data were collected using a questionnaire adapted from GATS 2012 and analyzed using both linear and logistic regression.
Results: The intention to quit smoking is determined by a person’s belief that smoking can cause an illness and this was statistically significant. This model predicted 15% regarding the intention to quit smoking within the past 1 month (Coeff =0.067; 95%CI: 0.03-0.11, R2=0.15). The logistic regression analysis showed people have intention to quit smoking within the past 1 month 9.04 times from PHW1 and this was statistically significant (OR:9.04; 95%CI:2.04-40.01, Pseudo-R2: 0.274, AIC:82).
Conclusions: Intention to quit smoking within the past 1 month was consistently associated with emotion reaction from a symbolic representation showing a smoker and child.
