Abstrak/Abstract | Around 3.4 million hectares of state forest areas in Indonesia has been illegally occupied by monoculture oil palm plantations in which around one third is managed by small-scale farmers. Insecurity in land tenure and access has led to low investment on land, low productivity and land conflicts. The social forestry schemes give the opportunity for the small-scale farmers to gain formal licenses to access the state forest lands given that farmers meet the requirements. One key requirement is that farmers should plant minimum certain number of trees, so called agroforestry, to maintain their access to state forest lands through the social forestry licensing. This key requirement has been perceived as impossible by most farmers as they have been widely cultivating oil palm in a monoculture system. Our action research is aiming at facilitating the adoption of oil palm agroforestry within the social forestry scheme by small-scale oil palm farmers in Sumatera and Kalimantan of Indonesia. We collaborate with small-scale farmers and multi stakeholders in various levels such as the government forestry offices at provincial and site levels, NGOs and local governments. We learned that (a) lack of evidence and information on oil palm agroforestry practices has created the farmers’ hesitation in adopting oil palm agroforestry; (b) the establishment of demonstration plots in the study areas have facilitated better understanding about oil palm agroforestry; (c) the farmer field school provides great opportunities to exchange ideas and experience among farmers; (d) the external supports have stimulated wider adoption of oil palm agroforestry. |
