Indonesia has decided to relocate its capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan as an ecologically sensitive island as it plays a vital role as the lunges of the world. The decision raises questions on sustainability as the relocation would encourage further urbanization that leads to environmental degradation. This paper aims to assess the government's capacity and local people's readiness to face the sustainability challenges of new capital development in a resource frontier region. The study employs literature study to explore the government's preparedness in implementing sustainable development principles and households surveys in the future locations of the new capital. The study reveals that the achievement of the Indonesian government in implementing sustainable development is not satisfactory. Our household surveys confirmed the limited knowledge, attitude, and practices of sustainable development among the locals. But, the people's openness to the migrant population is an advantage and crucial characteristic to face urbanization. There is a doubt that the development of the new capital city would successfully address the sustainability issues. The government at all levels should strengthen its commitment to implementing sustainability in developing the new capital. The local people need continuous assistance to face the rising problems and take the emerging opportunities from their urbanizing village for livelihood improvement.
