Abstrak/Abstract BUILDING STRATEGIC URBAN HERITAGE MANAGEMENT THROUGH INDONESIAN HERITAGE CITIES NETWORK Heritage itself has a sustainability concept where our common responsibility to the future generations in the time of globalization is to develop the local identity through interactive coordination’s heritage (Mimura, 2003). The sense of continuity of urban heritage becomes more important than ever. Urban heritage is not just about the past. It is a duty for everyone in this century to maintain and pass along to the future generations. In the same time it is a right to create, develop and contemplate the future heritage as well as managing urban heritage as a creative industry. In this regard, the sensitivity, taste, and creation of urban manager of heritage is definitely crucial. Conservation of heritage city is not only focused on the preservation of historic fabrics or beautification of monuments. It offers also a more holistic approach such as interpretation of various types of nature and cultural heritages – tangible and intangible, community participation program, economic analyses and forecasting, and attracting business and social-culture activities. The goal instead of conserving the historic value is providing a better quality of life. However, the recognition of urban heritage conservation taking place in different parts of Indonesia is still very diverse. Some are more advanced in conserving urban heritage and increasing the public awareness, but many are still struggling to start conservation steps. Meanwhile, everyday urban heritage is destroyed due to the sake of development, commercialization or it is just neglected. The Urban Space Heritage Conception (USHC) is proposed as a possible solution to the problems of heritage conservation planning today (Adishakti, 1997), which has come to the stage where people must find a way to establish the existence of various natural tangible as well as intangible cultural heritage in dynamic urban settings amid the rapid growth of modernization and be prepared for various kinds of risks. This paper offers a brief review on building the strategic urban heritage management through Indonesian Heritage Cities Network (Jaringan Kota Pusaka Indonesia/JKPI). This network, established in Solo on October 25, 2008, is a mayors and regents of heritage cities/regencies network in Indonesia. This review focuses on the on-going exploration of the role of urban manager and the effectiveness of the USHC in supporting urban heritage initiatives. It also highlights the importance of human resources development conducting by Indonesian Heritage Trust (Badan Pelestarian Pusaka Indonesia/BPPI) in collaboration with JKPI and other related institutions.
