Background: World Health Organization recommends rotavirus vaccines worldwide for all national immunization programs. Nevertheless, Indonesia has not yet developed a rotavirus vaccine. This research aimed at investigating awareness and acceptance of rotavirus and vaccine among mothers in Yogyakarta Province.
Methods: The questionnaire-based survey was conducted in Yogyakarta Province between June and December 2019 among mothers of children attended by primary health centers. Participated a convenient survey of 530 children's mothers aged 3 months to 3 years. Awareness, willingness to vaccinate their babies, and reasons for unwillingness to vaccinate have been identified. Association between variables and acceptance used logistic regression p<0.05 as meaning level.
Results: Of 530 respondents, most agreed to vaccinate their children (79.43%). Many respondents had poor knowledge of rotavirus gastroenteritis (57.74%). In multivariate analysis, our study found significant association between acceptance of rotavirus vaccine by mothers and sociodemographic factors. Mothers as healthcare workers (OR = 6.38; 95 percent CI = 2.78-8.68) and high-knowledge mothers (OR = 6.23; 95 percent CI = 2.79-10.34) were 6 times more likely to give rotavirus vaccination to their children.
Conclusions: Improving mothers' awareness of rotavirus vaccine is significant. By including this vaccine in the National Immunization Program, Indonesia 's public population would embrace it, which would boost its coverage.
