Background: The quality of life (QoL) is comprehensive component in assessing health covering physical, mental, and social aspect of health. The study objectives were to describe QoL among high school students and to examine the relationship of QoL with parent’s socioeconomic factors and adolescent health literacy. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jambi Province Indonesia, among students from ten high schools in Jambi Province during the period from August until November 2018. The validated and pretested questionnaire was used, consists of three sections, parents socioeconomic characteristics, adolescent health literacy, and the QOL measure using WHO QoL-BREF. For data analysis, t-test and ANOVA were used in bivariate analysis. Results: A total number of 818 students were participated in this study (319 male and 499 female). The mean QoL score from the highest to the lowest was physical health, social relation, environment, and psychological health, with score of 80.05; 74.67; 74.51; and 73.01 respectively. Overall health QoL score of 76.86 means that students had moderate quality of life. QoL score was higher for students with adequate health literacy in psychological, social relation and environment domains, compared with those who had lower health literacy.
Furthermore, we found that students who get adolescent education program at school had higher quality of life in all domains. Conclusion: Providing school-based adolescent education can support to students to better control their physical health, learning, social relationships and preparation for their future. All health professionals can provide opportunities to students by providing access reproductive health information to navigate this period of development successfully. |
