Abstrak/Abstract Background: Assessment of drug use patterns is essential in order to promote rational drug use. The WHO drug use indicator is currently becoming minimum standard in documenting rational prescribing. The objective of study was to determine the drug prescribing profile at Pharmacy Department of Sleman District Hospital, using the WHO core indicators on drug use. Methods: A cross-sectional survey on one site study setting was conducted. The sample of patient’s prescription was randomly selected. A number of 700 patient encounters were included in this study, collected from January 2017 to December 2017. A data collection form developed and validated previously was used. Profile of drug use was presented descriptively. Results: The main findings showed that, from a total of drugs prescribed (2,215), the mean number of drugs prescribed was 3.16 (SD 0.89) with a range from 1 to 4. The antibiotic prescribed per encounter was reaching 15.75%. The proportion of generic drugs prescribed by international non-proprietary name and in the list of national drug formulary was 95.66% and 97.78, respectively. The most frequently antibiotics were amoxicillin 10.74%. The number of drug prescribed shows diversion from the WHO standard. Conclusion: Annual drug use evaluation should be conducted for unnecessary medication. Developing guidelines to strengthen appropriate use of antibiotics and compliance with national drug use policies must be implemented on a regular basis to all health professionals.
