Background: In Indonesia, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of death. Several
measures to quantify the burden of cancer are years of life lost (YLL) and productivity cost,
thus providing strong evidence that cervical cancer has a large economic impact.
Methods: This study employed epidemiological approach, using prevalence data of 2018.
The productivity cost and YLL were estimated by calculating the number of cervical cancer
mortality, the life expectancy, annual earning, and employment participation rate. Cervical
cancer mortality was taken from Globocan 2018, life expectancy of Indonesian was taken
from the WHO data Life Tables year 2019, while the annual earning and participation rate of
Indonesian was retrieved from National Statistics Bureau 2018.
Results: The results indicated that there were 17,253 cervical cancer deaths in Indonesia,
which resulted in 246,350 years of life lost (YLL). In Indonesia, the total productivity costs
associated with cervical cancer mortality totaled IDR23,174 trillion. The age group of 50-64
years experienced the greatest loss of earnings (IDR12,149 trillion), followed by 35-49 years
(IDR8,944 trillion) and 20-34 years (IDR8,944 trillion).
Conclusion: Estimation of the burden of cervical cancer helps the government in
determining health programs and to reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Indonesia. |
