The effectiveness of adaptation strategies adopted by farmers depends on farmers’ perceptions
about climate change. Understanding of the perceptions and adaptations of farmers in farming
activities in response to climate change will provide insights to sustain vegetable production. On the
other hand, there are various obstacles that challenge farmers’ adaptation to climate change. Hence,
this study aims to determine the perceptions and adaptations carried out by organic vegetable
farmers to reduce the negative impacts of climate change, and the obstacles they have to face. The
survey was conducted from February to August 2018 by involving 90 organic vegetable farmers in
Central Java, Indonesia. Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship
between perception and adaptation of farmers in dealing with climate change. The analysis shows
that most of organic vegetable farmers are aware of climate change and are trying to implement more
strategies to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. Farmers’ perceptions about climate
change correlate with the adaptations they implemented. Organic farmers are faced with constraints
of limited funds to adapt to climate change. This study recommends that relevant stakeholders need
to increase farmers’ perceptions and adaptations to reduce the negative impacts of climate change
by increasing the accessibility of information and training on climate change and its impacts.
