Abstrak/Abstract Classical music notation is the basis for studying Western classical music instruments (including violin) in a formal institution majoring in classical music. Based on pre-observation, the author knows that classical music notation has to undergo adaptation in non-formal institutions (or music courses), one of which is a violin class at Jogja Music School. This research will therefore discuss how classical music notation plays a role for students in the violin practicing process at Jogja Music School. This research used a qualitative method with a musicological approach, with consists of observation, interviews, and documentation. Based on the data obtained from two students, it was found that one student played pop songs with classical music notation in different ways (playing improvisation), and the author found the other student played pop songs without classical music notation. In the discussion section, the comparative technique is used to analyze the learning process of both students. The results of this research have shown that classical music notation plays a role in shaping student’s disciplinary behavior of students in playing a musical piece. The discipline of playing a musical piece includes the discipline of reading rhythm, melody, as well as the discipline in playing the violin technique such as fingerings, bowing, and articulation. In addition, it was found that other notation can be implemented in the violin practicing process at Jogja Music School.
