Surgery is one of the important components of health services because in addition to eliminating the suffering of surgical patients, it also involves high costs. Prophylactic antibiotics appropriate use in surgery is crucial for success healing process of patient's wounds, in addition to preventing the acceleration of antibiotic resistance. This study aims to explore and evaluate appropriate use of antibiotic prophylaxis among digestive and orthopedic surgery patients’ with hospital guidelines in Academic Hospital Universitas Gadjah Mada. This study was an observational study with cross-sectional design. Data was obtained retrospectively through patients’ medical report. Patients’ included in this study were hospitalized patients with digestive and orthopedic surgery, aged 18-64 years who received prophylactic antibiotics with complete medical record data. Data were analyzed and presented descriptively. Study results showed that out of 146 patients involved in this study, 71.9% of patients were in accordance with the indications, 45.2% of patients were in accordance with the type of antibiotic with the most use being ceftriaxone, 22.6% of patients were in accordance with the duration, and 15.1% of patients were in accordance with the dose and time of administration. In conclusion, this study found that most patients received appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis indication but not in term of dosage and time of administration.
