Abstrak/Abstract Bamboo is known for its good strength properties. However, the use of bamboo for constructionmaterial is hindered due to several factors, such as the ease of being attacked bythe fungus, termites, andbeetles. The aim of study is to investigate the effect of bamboo preservation withimmersion in diesel oilon the water content and the tensile strength.For this purpose, an experiment was carried out ondifferent species of bamboo, namely Apus(GigantochloaapusKurz), Ampel(Bambusa vulgaris Schrad.ex J.C),and Wulung(GigantochloaapusKurz).The experiment was initiated by preserving the bamboo with immersion in diesel oil for 0, 2, 4, 7, and10 days. Each rod of the bamboo was divided into 3 parts (namely bottom, middle, and top). The watercontent and tensile strength test was carried out on the bamboo specimens for each period of time. Everytest was repeated three times.The test results showed that thewater content tends to increase as the result of immersion in dieseloil, the longer the immersion time, the water content would increase more. The highest increase was inbamboo Ampel (24.8%) and the lowest was in Wulung bamboo (1.41%). The tensile strength of bambootends to decrease. The highest declineoccurred in bamboo Apus of 58.85%, and the lowest was inbamboo Wulung of 12.31%. For non-preserved bamboo, Apus has the highest tensile strength of 580.4MPa, whereas after soaking for 10 days, Wulung has the the highest tensile strength of 352.92 MPa.Keywords:bamboo preservation, tensile strength, water content,diesel oil.
