The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a combination of tanning agents (formalin and syntan) in bovine pancreas bating agent (protease) on the quality of tanned stingray skin. The treatments tried were: treatment A (4% formalin + 6% syntan), B (4% formalin + 8% syntan), C (6% formalin + 6% syntan), and D (6% formalin + 8% syntan, using a protease enzyme instead of orophone as a protein abrasive agent. The physical parameters observed were: tensile strength (kg/cm2), tear strength (kg/cm), flexibility (ømm), elongation (%), wrinkle temperature (°C); and chemical parameters, namely: oil/fat content (%) and moisture content (%) Based on the test results it appears that the values of tensile strength, tear strength, wrinkle temperature, moisture content, & fat/oil content of the tanned stingray samples produced from each the treatments (A, B, C, & D) have met the quality standard requirements, except for the softening values from treatments A, B, C, D, as well as the elongation values from treatments A and D, have not met the quality requirements as recommended in SNI. 06- 6121-1999 and SNI 06-0234-1990.
