Abstrak/Abstract The frequency and spread of tropical peat-fires have attracted global attention since they cause significant environmental and health issues. In order to understand the important factors assumed to be key for tropical peatland burning events, we developed PeatFire, an agent-based model simulating the interaction between human-induced ignitions, fire, and peat characteristics. The model describes (1) above and below-ground fires, which spread independently but interact with each other, (2) above- and below-ground biomass, and (3) the water table determining peat dryness and susceptibility to fire. PeatFire was applied to a region in South Sumatra which experienced profound natural rainforest loss. Sensitivity analysis of the model suggests that fire sizes depends mostly on water table depth, peat dry index and the number of dry days before ignition. Using pattern oriented modelling, these factors were parameterized so that the model output matches observed spatio-temporal fire patterns in the study region of the year 2015. Our results emphasize the risk of a sudden shift from moderate fire occurrence to complete burning. They highlight the importance of local context related to peatland regulation which should consider both bio-physical and socio-economic factors, as well as peatland fire management strategies such as canal blocking and rewetting
