Background: The surge in COVID-19 cases exacerbates the global shortage of nurses. Strategies taken around the world to meet the shortage of nursing staff include recruiting student health volunteers.
Objective: To explore the contribution and involvement of nursing student volunteers during COVID-19 and provide recommendations for universities, organizations, policymakers to build and improve the effectiveness of volunteer services.
Method: A systematic review uses Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review, and Meta-Analysis approaches (PRISMA). The systematic review was registered in PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews with CRD42021283069. Electronic databases: SCOPUS, EBSCO MEDLINE, PubMed, ProQuest, Springer, and SagePUb and grey literature to search for articles using the keyword search strategy. Articles were selected with the inclusion criteria of the PICO framework: the population
must include nursing students, but may include other health students; Intervention: the state of the covid-19 pandemic; Comparison: none, Outcome: reported results for contributions, engagement and experience as volunteers during Covid-19, D: design: original qualitative or quantitative design articles or mixed methods published from 2019 to 2021 in English. Study quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tool. Data extraction and data synthesis using the PICO framework with thematic analysis.
