Abstrak/Abstract Carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a widely cultivated horticultural crop that traces its origins to Central Asia. Belonging to the Apiaceae family, carrots have gained popularity due to their substantial nutritional value, including elevated levels of essential vitamins (A, C, and K) and antioxidants. Given their significant role as a sought-after commodity in society, there arises a necessity to delve into the chromosomal characteristics of various carrot cultivars. Understanding these aspects can pave the way for a comprehensive assessment of their genetic makeup and potential applications. Mitotic time period and chromosome characteristics of the two cultivars were investigated through a comprehensive approach. Observations were carried out to determine their mitotic time periods. The tips were stained then squashed subsequently to facilitate the spread of chromosomes. A high magnification microscope was used to observe the samples, generating karyotypes and idiograms that illustrated structural traits. Comparisons of 'Berastagi' and 'Ta Fung' highlighted similarities in chromosome morphology, size, and karyotype formulas, with some differences in chromosome formula unveiling their unique genetic attributes and distinctions. Mitotic time periods for both cultivars were established (09:00 – 10:00 for ‘Berastagi’, 09:00 – 10:10 for ‘Ta Fung’; GMT+7) along with the chromosomal formulas (‘Berastagi’ 2n = 2x = 18 m; ‘Ta Fung’ 2n = 2x = 14 m + 4 sm) for both cultivars with their respective karyotypes and idiograms. This study’s findings offer crucial insights into the chromosomal characteristics of ‘Berastagi’ and ‘Ta Fung’ carrot cultivars. The congruence in chromosome count between the two cultivars highlights their shared genetic foundation, albeit with distinct structural variations. Such primary data gleaned from this research lays the foundation for further research, mainly in breeding efforts for both cultivars.
