Spatial metadata has been long identified as one of minimum requirements to establih geospatial
information infrastructure. For data providers, metadata resources play an important role in
implementing effective and efficient data management. For users, metadata resources allow users to
discover and select geospatial data and geospatial content that fit for their purpose. There have been
numerous existing spatial metadata standards like CSGDM from FGDC and CEN T C287 from European
Community before ISO standard for spatial metadata (known as ISO:19115) emerges since the beginning
of 2000. Currently, national standard bodies are either adopting of the ISO standard or in the process in
migrating to ISO:19115. This was the result as the ISO standard provides more benefits in regard to data
interoperability and data reusability. In 2008, Indonesia adopted CSGDM as Indonesia National
Standard (known as SNI 7335). Although SNI 7335 gives good structure and extensibility, but it provides
very minimum guidances on mandatory elements to be filled in. In addition to this, ISO:19115 offers
better definition on metadata elements, more optional elements and provides more support for users to
locate, evaluate, extract and apply geospatial dataset and content. This paper presents the results of
exploration of ISO19115 in support for migrating metadata standard in Indonesia from SNI 7335 that
based on CSGDM into ISO:19115.
