Abstrak/Abstract The aim of this study was to explore medication adherence among chronic disease patients using self-report measures. A systematic review was performed on articles from PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar during the period 2008-2018. A combination of key terms such as “medication adherence”, “self-report”, “chronic disease” was used for the search. Original articles published in English and reported medications adherence using questionnaire in patient with chronic disease was used as the inclusion criteria. There were 16 articles that met all eligibility criteria, then included in the review. We found that the level of adherence medication patients with chronic diseases, especially diabetes mellitus, hypertension and COPD is still very low. The associated factors were sociodemographic, patient confidence, patient behavior, and low awareness of health personnel on patient clinical outcome. Self-report instrument commonly used was MMAS-4 and MMAS-8. Our review indicated that medication adherence is a health issue that needs to be addressed. Medication adherence to the therapy of chronic diseases is very useful to improve the quality of life of patients. The existence of health interventions, changes in patient behavior and care of health professionals will greatly help improve the health condition of the patients.
