Abstrak/Abstract The aim of the study is to formulate a theory about Javanese adolescent self-concept in relation with friends. The subjects of this research are three Javanese adolescents, two girls and one boy. Data was taken with in-depth interviews and observation and was analyzed by grounded theory approach. The results of this study indicate that Javanese adolescents interprets himself as plural selves, hierarchical interdependent, and fluctuated. Individuals have a lot of self that represent their relationships with others. Selves are composed with each other in a hierarchical relationship. In a particular time time individuals is only activate one self. The self-activation process is going through with the principle of "if ... , then ... ". Subjects start activating himself to recognize their friends and situations. They will compare and evaluate themselves, then they select and activate one of self that they had. When a Javanese adolescent still with their friends, they will not think about physical aspect, be themself, feels equal, accepted, understood, and trusted, as a good person. View of themselves thus causing the subject tend to feel comfortable and at ease when with friends.
