The sound quality of a musical instrument is very much dependent on its material. Spruce is believedto be one of the best kinds of wood for making musical instruments. Previous studies have shown thatpine and petung bamboo have similar characteristics to spruce. To better understand the quality of soundproduced by the three types of wood, a study was conducted on three guitars with top plates made fromspruce, pine, and petung bamboo. The study was divided into two main parts,i.e. the measurement ofsound characteristics and the measurement of the vibration characteristics of the guitars. The soundcharacteristics measured were the tuning characteristics, the frequency spectrum, and the damping factorof the guitar sound. Themeasured vibration characteristics were the frequency response of the top plates. These parameters were analysed in relation to the tuning quality, loudness, timbre, brightness and soundsustain. The measurement results show that the spruce guitar has better loudness and timbre than theother two guitars. The pineand petung bambooguitarshave the tendency to produce abrighter sound, whereas the petung bamboo guitar has alongersustain. However, the three guitars have more or less thesametuningquality. Keywords:Acoustic guitar, spruce, pine, petung bamboo, characteristics. |
