Abstrak/Abstract Kayu merah (Pterocarpus indicus Willd)/angsana, a high quality and multiple purpose tree, has categorized as endangered species. Litle known that kayu merah has two subspecies (forma) that is differentiated based on the surface structure of the central seed case; smooth for forma indicus while densely covered with bristles for forma echinatus. This study will be used to identfy origin of kayu merah seedling and become a preliminary study to compare morphological and growth characters of two populations and subspecies kayu merah i.e. Pulau Seram, Mollucas (smooth pods, forma indicus) and Pulau Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (prickly pods, forma echinatus). The study found differences in morphological (stem and leaves) and growth characters of kayu merah from Pulau Seram and Pulau Flores. Kayu merah from Pulau Seram (forma indicus) has many smooth spots with a little groove on the stem, and a pointed leaf tip while kayu merah from Pulau Flores (forma echinatus) has many fine brown smooth grooves with a few fine spots on the trunk, and a split end shape. Kayu merah from Pulau Seram has also high growth characters (as shown in total height, diameter and sturdiness quotient) than Pulau Flores.
