Aim and Background: Paku atai merah (Angiopteris ferox Copel) tuber is a type of fern plant that
has been used empirically as a traditional medicine in society. The part of the plant that is often
used is the tuber. But scientifically this plant is not known for its secondary metabolite content. The
purpose of this study was to determine the secondary metabolites found in paku atai merah tubers.
Methods: The sample was extracted by maceration method with ethanol solvent, fractionated by
conventional column chromatography and characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
Results: The fractionation using the chromatographic column was obtained as many as 13 fractions.
From the fraction, the optimal separation from fraction 4 (F4) was obtained. The results of the
separation again from F4 obtained a total of 17 sub-fractions (F1-F17). Sub-fraction of F7 and F8
showed good purity and the results of characterization showed that F7 and F8 were the same
compounds, namely Angiopteroside compounds.
Conclusion: This study provides a contribution that the Angiopteris ferox Copel species contains a
secondary metabolite in the form of Angiopteroside which can be developed in the discovery of new
drugs.
