Abstrak/Abstract This paper describes the preliminary results of the development of remote Sensing-based benthic habitat classification scheme of Karimunjawa Islands. At this stage, three hierarchical benthic classification schemes were constructed based on ecological variations of benthic habitats. Field benthic habitats data was obtained via photo-transect method and the interpretation of the photo was performed on ecological perspective. The first level scheme consists of four major benthic habitats, coral reefs, seagrass, macro algae, and bare substratum. The second level scheme was constructed based on the variations of life-form, pigmentations, species compositions, and substrate origins. The third level scheme was the more detail version of the second level scheme. There were 5, 19, and 29 benthic classes for the first, second, and third level of benthic habitat classification scheme respectively. These schemes did not consider the descriptive resolution of multispectral remote sensing data. Worldview-2, ALOS AVNIR-2, and Landsat 5 TM were used as the representative multispectral remote sensing data. The results of this preliminaryworks have shown that fully utilizing ecological perspective for benthic habitat mapping using remote sensing data was not effective and producing low accuracy despite the methods. Thus, to effectively used remote sensing data for benthic habitat mapping, the scheme should be constructed by considering the descriptive resolution of the remote sensing data. Furthermore, the interpretation of field benthic data should also be in remote sensing perspective.
