The development of information technology and
internet of things has been increasing the need of
communication and data transmission among electronic
devices wirelessly. One of the best solution among existing
wireless communication technology is wifi because it is able
to transmit data with high speed rate and has wider coverage
area. However, in general the firmware of wifi-based
electronic devices is closed so it can not be modified for the
the sake of application customization. In this paper,
OpenWrt is proposed as a solution to solve the need of
wireless communication and data transmission which is
portable, reliable and flexible. OpenWrt is a linux-based
operating system suitable for embedded systems which is
specially configured as a wifi router. Since OpenWrt is
open-source it can be modified and customized to conform
the user’s requirements. In this case, OpenWrt is modified to
perform additional function for sending-receiving data and
controlling a robot. Experiment has been conducted on
OpenWrt GLiNet 6416 device. The results showed that the
implementation of customization OpenWrt able to run its
standard function as a wifi router at the same time it
perfroms data transmission and controlling robot properly.
