Background: Sepsis/septic shock and bronchopneumonia are infectious diseases commonly cause morbidity and mortality in pediatric patients. Drug-related problems potentially occurred in the infections management and the leading cause of death.
Objective: To identify the types of drug-related problems potentially occurred in sepsis/septic shock and bronchopneumonia management in pediatric patients at Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta during 2000-2004.
Method: A retrospective study was conducted during 2000-2004. The data were obtained from the patient’s medical record, consist of 90 files of sepsis/septic shock patients and 105 files of bronchopneumonia patients. The data were analyzed descriptively.
Result: Wrong drugs (contraindicated) potentially occurred in 2 sepsis/septic shock patients (2,08% from total DRP) and 21 (17%) bronchopneumonia patients. Whereas sub therapeutic dose potentially happened in 45 (46,87%) sepsis/septic shock patients and 18 (15%) bronchopneumonia patients. In addition overdose, drug interaction potentially occurred in 17 (17,71%) sepsis/septic shock patients and 27 (22%) bronchopneumonia patients; and 32 (33,33%) sepsis/septic shock patients and 55 (46%) bronchopneumonia patients respectively.
Conclusion: Drug-related problems potentially occurred in severe infectious disease management in pediatric patients. Pharmacist must aware to prevent DRP to minimize mortality in pediatric patients.
