TheSpermondeIslandsarelocatedinMakassarStrait,southernSulawesi,Indonesia,andhaveattractedtheattentionofresearchersfordecadesbecauseoftheirmegabiodiversityandabundanceofbioresources.However,nostudyhasevaluatedthepotentialmariculturediseasesinthisarea.ThepresentstudyassessedthepotentialbacterialfishdiseasesbasedonthecurrentstatusofmaricultureintheSpermondeIslands.ThesampleswerecollectedfromthreemarineaquaculturesitesatBarrangCaddiandtheSamaloaIslands.VibriowasisolatedonThiosulfate-citrate-bile-sucrose(TCBS)agarmedium.Themostcommonbacterialdiseaseswereobservedbybacterialisolation,morphologicalandbiochemicalobservations,andmolecularidentificationbasedon16SrDNAsequence.Themicrobial,physical,andchemicalwaterqualitiesatBarrangCaddiandSamaloaIslandweresuitableformarineaquaculture.Althoughculturedspeciesinthisareadidnotexhibitgrossdiseasesigns,potentialopportunisticpathogensofVibriowerefound.The16SrDNAsequencesanalysisindicatedthatthebacterialisolatesclosedtoVibrioowensii,V.alginolyticus,andV.neocaledonicus.Multi-drugresistantV.owensiiwasidentifiedasapotentialpathogeninmarineaquaculture.ThisisthefirstreportonV.owensiiisolatedfromIndonesianmarinewaters,particularlyfromtheSpermondeIslands.V.alginolyticuswasanotherpotentialopportunisticpathogeninthisarea.Theseresultsgavethealarmtodevelopcountermeasuremethodsforpotentialdiseasestominimizethepossibleoutbreakofvibriosis |
