HOW TO BEST PREPARE PHARMACY STUDENTS FOR DISASTER MANAGEMENT: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

Abstrak/Abstract
Objective: This study explores the experiences and opinions of academic and practitioner pharmacists about what pharmacy students need to prepare for disaster management.
Methods: Semi-structured individual interviews are used for data collection during April through June 2021. The research participants are nine pharmacists who are either very concerned or experienced in disaster management. The interview guide is developed following a comprehensive literature review on disaster management. Data is analyzed using thematic analysis.
Results: The main themes identified are knowledge of disaster; management of drugs, medical devices and diseases; specific skills in disaster management; personal readiness and open attitudes toward involvement in disaster management; and appropriate behavior in the face of disaster. Participants receive special training in the most important soft skills, especially communication and creative thinking, which are essential for students.
Conclusion: Various areas of competence are needed to prepare pharmacy students for combating disasters. Soft skills, especially communication and creative thinking, have the highest priority.
