Abstrak/Abstract Androgenetic alopecia (AA) is hair loss caused by genetic factors and androgen hormones. Clove essential oil (CEO) contains eugenol, which has anti-androgen activity and can be used to treat AA. Formulation of CEO into hair serum nanoemulsion overcomes the CEO several disadvantages. The aims of this study are the preparation, characterization, and evaluation of hair growth activity of hair serum nanoemulsion loaded CEO. The chemical components of CEO were analyzed by gas chromatography. The optimum formula was obtained using the D-Optimal Design method and was further characterized for droplet size, size distribution, pH, viscosity, thermodynamic stability, and storage stability. In vivo skin irritation and hair growth activity studies were evaluated. The result showed the GC-MS analysis of the CEO consisted of eight components, of which the main component is eugenol (60.72%). The optimum formula consists of CEO (10.63%), cremophor RH 40 (67.5%), and propylene glycol (21.87%). The formula has a droplet size of 31.26±0.155 nm, a PDI value of 0.24±0.008, a pH of 5.55±0.01, a viscosity of 2386.18±62.77 cP, thermodynamically and physically stable, and doesn’t show the skin irritation. The length and weight of the hair of the treatment group were 2.28±0,12 cm and 2.28±0,12 g, respectively. The hair serum nanoemulsion loaded CEO showed the highest hair growth activity, demonstrating the preparation has an effect on promoting hair growth and the potential for promising hair growth nutraceutical to AA treatment.
