Dear Editors,
Prawira et al. (2018) presented records of the Sulawesi
endemic Grosbeak Starling Scissirostrum dubium on Borneo
(East Kalimantan province) and Java (West Java and East
Java provinces, Jakarta and Yogyakarta). These birds were all
presumed to be escapees from the songbird trade or their
offspring and they reported that from 2010 to December
2016 almost 100 Grosbeak Starlings had been observed on
six occasions in bird markets in six cities. They also referred
to one record of a Grosbeak Starling offered for sale online in
Palembang, Sumatra (Iqbal 2015). They warned that the trade
and the escapees might threaten native bird populations,
especially in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, and Yogyakarta,
East Java.
