Abstract
Background
Intercity mobility restriction, physical distancing, and mask-wearing are preventive behavior to reduce transmission of the SARS-COV-2 virus causing COVID-19. While there is no effective treatment and low coverage of vaccination programs in Indonesia, high adherence to preventive behaviors is required to control the COVID-19 pandemic. However, cultural and religious traditions in Indonesia challenged the adherence to preventive behaviors. Based on the Behaviour Change Wheel, it is important to identify barriers and facilitators to adherence to preventive behavior to inform future public health intervention and policy development.
Method
This study uses the Behaviour Change Wheel exploring barriers and facilitators to intercity mobility restriction, physical distancing, and mask-wearing during Ramadan. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 50 Indonesian adults were carried out between 10 April and 4 June 2020. Having Mapped codes into the Capacity, Opportunity, Motivation – Behaviour (COM-B) and Theoretical Domain Framework (TDF) model, summative content analysis was conducted to analyze the most commonly identified factors to preventive behaviors.
Results: Belief about the consequence of preventive behaviors mapped in the motivation domain was the most commonly mentioned facilitators to all preventive behavior among compliers. However, optimism as a TDF factor mapped in motivation was commonly mentioned barriers of preventive behaviors among non-compliers. Environmental context and resource as a TDF factor mapped in opportunity was the most commonly mentioned factors influencing intercity mobility restriction.
Conclusion: Positive framed messaging around physical distancing, and mask-wearing delivered. by religious and community leaders to increase positive belief about the consequence of these behaviors could be suggested to increase adherence. Concerning the opportunity factors that consist of job and economic context, policy related to the intercity mobility restriction should be reconsidered to prevent a counterproductive result to other preventive behaviors.
