Background : Alcohol consumption has become one of the most common risk factors after smoking in cancer. Nowadays, estimation of the burden of disease attributable to alcohol has become standard in documenting the impact of health problems, but it was rarely performed in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to estimate treatment cost of cancer related to alcohol consumption among Indonesian population.
Methods : This research design was an descriptive study. A prevalence-based approach using secondary data is used. Proportion of alcohol attribution toward cancers was calculated using alcohol-attributable fractions (AAF) formula. Treatment cost of eight types of cancer calculated according to average of treatment cost per patient from national universal health coverage database 2016.
Result : The top three of AAFs in male were, cancer of pharynx, esophagus, larynx (17.50%; 15.31%; 7.98%) respectively, while in female were cancer of esophagus, pharynx, stomach (2.15%; 1.39%; 0.83%) respectively. Among the eight types of cancer studied, highest incidence in male was noted to be liver cancer (132 cases) and colorectum cancer among the females (31 cases). Treatment cost of cancer-related to alcohol consumption was seen highest for colorectum cancer followed by larynx and liver cancer in USD (116,083, 98,325 and 93,253) respectively.
Conclussion : The expenditure of treatment of cancer-related to alcohol consumption accounts to about 1.71% of total cancer treatment cost. The cancers related to alcohol consumption is considered having an economic impact in Indonesia, so it becomes important for the government to control on alcohol consumption so that healthcare expenditure on alcohol-related cancers can be minimized.
