Background: Pharmacists are front-line health care providers play a vital role in improving patient care through the medicine and information they provide. They are expected to play a multitude of roles involved provider of drug information and drug educator. Yet, few pharmacists In Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta are adequately prepared to provide drug information.
Aims:The study was carried out to assess the preparedness of community pharmacies as drug information center and to assess the effect of interventions to pharmacist’s performance.
Methods: Questionnaires were administered to the pharmacists to gather information on the preparedness of community pharmacies regarding pharmacists’ perception, motivation and capability, as well as their facilities to do counselling. Study of the impact of interventions to pharmacists’ performance was conducted by distributed questionnaire to their costumers. Two models of interventions were conducted, i.e. information guideline provided and the guideline with training by investigators. Pre-posttests were conducted to assess impact of interventions upon pharmacists’ performance. Descriptive statistical tests were used to to determine the preparedness of community pharmacies. The t-test analysis was used to evaluate the effect of interventions on the pharmacists’ performance. Equation of regression correlation was used to identify correlation between the three categories (perception, motivation, and capability) and pharmacists’ performance.
Results: The study revealed that most of pharmacists had highly perception (53.15%) and motivation (62.7%), however their capability was only intermediate (51.6%). Almost all of the pharmacies provided all of counseling facilities, but guideline, standard operating procedure and computerized system were not available. Intervention study at a group of pharmacists with the guideline provided and trained by investigators result in significantly difference between before and after intervention (P< 0.05).
