Potassium salt of 1,5-bis(4’-hydroxy-3’-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-buten-3-one, a new derivative of 1,5-bis(4’-hydroxy-3’-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-buten-3-one has been synthesized. The compound was examined its activity as hydroxyl radical scavenger using deoxyribose method. The activity was compared to the activities of some anti-inflammatory agents, i.e. 1,5-bis(4’-hydroxy-3’-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-buten-3-one, sodium salt of PGV-0, ascorbic acid, sodium diclofenac and paracetamol.
The result showed that potassium salt of 1,5-bis(4’-hydroxy-3’-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-buten-3-one did not have hydroxyl radical scavenger activity. Sodium salt of PGV-0 and sodium diclofenac, which are anti-inflammatory agents was showed not having hydroxyl radical scavenger activity. The results showed that if potassium salt of 1,5-bis(4’-hydroxy-3’-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-buten-3-one has anti-inflammatory activity, the mechanism will not be through hydroxyl radical scavenging. The anti-inflammatory activity of this compound need to be verified by another in vitro test, i.e. cyclooxigenase (COX) inhibition test and in vivo method test. |
