Dyslipidemia is an important risk factor of atherosclerosis. Investigation and application of haerbal medicine to treat of dyslipidemia has attracted attention by researchers. Several plants, or parts thereof, those grow in Indonesia are used for dyes, cosmetics, spices, daily food, or medicine. One of these plants is Curcuma xanthorrhiza, which is known as temulawak (javanese) and Gynura procumbens or sambung nyawa (Indonesian). Almost of jamu products contain Curcuma xanthorrhiza and/or Gynura procumbens. For seeking the good natural material to develop new agent to treat hyperlipid, the present study investigated the dyslipidemia treatment effect of Curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizome and Gynura procumbens leaf extract in rat. Hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia were induced in rats by administration of high fat and egg yolk diet for 30 days orally. Combination of Curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizome and Gynura procumbens leaf extract at ratio 100:0, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, 0:100 were administrated in period of 4 weeks after inducing hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia. Concentration of serum trygliceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL, and HDL were determined. Combination of Curcuma xanthorrhiza rhizome and Gynura procumbens leaf extract at ratio 75:25 has a high anti-dyslipidemic potential along with a good hypolipidemic profile. It is known that Curcuma xanthorrhiza contains curcumin and demethoxycurcumin and Gynura procumbens contains flavonoids such as flavone/flavonol (3-hydroxy flavone), and volatile oils. |
