ABSTRACT
Panggung Krapyak is located 2 km away from southern area of Kraton Yogyakarta. It was once a castle which functioned for king to watch soldiers training and hunting deer. Besides, there is also Village of Wijen, situated in northern area of Panggung Krapyak as visualization of Philosophical Axis concept of Yogyakarta city that symbolizes weed of from human journey process to adulthood. Panggung Krapyak is also named as Kampung Santri (Islamic student village) due to a long existence of Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in that area, it described that the existence of Pondok Pesantren immensely influenced development in Panggung Krapyak – Kampung Wijen area. The settlement development that was caused by Pondok Pesantren existence was very exquisite, especially the settlement near to Pondok Pesantren, many changes of settlement land use for the Pondok Pesantren’s and its students’ (santri) need fulfillment, like temporary housings, kos-kosan (rented bedroom), restaurants, photocopy shops, and angkringan (foodselling push cart or food stall), thus there was activity mix, mainly locations near to the Pesantren.
The problem of this research was to see the physical element characteristics of D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum street spaces so that it became a guide in the recommendation of current D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum street space development.
The used methods in this research were observation and research-related document collection. Observation was aimed for primary data collection by observing visually the changes that happened from street space physical element in D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum street spaces. Secondarily data collection was
obtained from existed documents and it could be reference to compare the existed documents with observation result. The result of this research was that the D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum street spaces were implied the area of cultural heritages and historical relics which was not compatible with development that occurred in D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum caused by environment quality especially street space physical elements that had less support on it. It needed follow up – forms from related stakeholders, roles and public in Panggung Krapyak area to fulfill the D.I. Panjaitan and K.H. Ali Maksum street as one of city image preservation cores to annunciate the cultural heritage and historical relic area.
