Pectin is a polysaccharide composed of galacturonates and widely used in food and pharmaceutical industries, such as raw material for the edible film. Pectin is also been used as medium for drug delivery system (DDS). The controlling factors of the film DDS are the amount of cross-linker and plasticizer added in the formation of edible film. This study aimed to observe the effect of cross-linker and plasticizer to edible film physical properties and drug
loading capacity. Cinnamaldehyde was used as the drug model. The experiments were conducted in two main steps : (1) edible film production at various crosslinker concentrations of 0.05, 0.15, 0.25, and 0.45 g cross-linker/mL solution and plasticizer concentrations of 0%, 3%, and 4.5%, (2) drug loading into the film. Edible film characteristic were also observed
such as the film thickness, swelling tendency, and surface properties through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The film thickness were measured around 0.085-0.15 mm. The highest film swelling percentage occurs with lowest concentration of cross-linker and the highest plasticizer concentration. Maximum drug loading efficiency obtained was 22.89% for sample with cross-linker concentration of 0.15 g crosslinker/mL solution and 24.37% for sample with plasticizer concentration of 4.5% respectively.
