A variety of prefabricated early orthodontic appliances are currently available for the correction of lip incompetence (LI) and orofacial muscle training. LI is a multifactorial etiology of increasing age in children with a prevalence of approximately 35.72%. LI, also known as mentalis strain, refers to a condition characterized by an inability to hold the lips together easily at rest. Children with LI should receive prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent developmental delays in symptoms such as breathing, tooth eruption, dental arch alignment, and swallowing. However, the literature is lacking in descriptions of the usefulness of orofacial myofunctional appliances in the context of LI. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the clinical efficacy and mechanism of various therapeutic orofacial myofunctional appliances in children. Literature obtained from PubMed and manual search limited to 1980–2023 with determined keywords, a total of 401 articles (original articles). Seven literatures showed significance (p<0.001) in Oral Screen, Lip Trainer (Patakara®, Japan), and Lipple Trainer® (SHOFU Inc., Japan) as prefabricated early orthodontic appliances to improve lip closure and strength with an average duration of use of 1-4 months. Therefore, it is possible to modify the coordination and stability of mouth activities, lip closure strength, and face while promoting proper facial development. Orofacial myofunctional appliances may be considered as a treatment option to improve lip closure strength in children with LI. However, treating the function of the whole stomatognathic system in children requires good cooperation from patients and parents. Further studies are needed to clarify the various characteristics of clinical outcomes. |
