The increasing population growth rate causes an increase in demand for land and groundwater usage. Limited land in cities means urban development will focus on sub-urban areas within the city area. This research aims to describe changes in groundwater recharge in sub-urban regions of Bantul Regency and analyze urbanization's effects on groundwater recharge in sub-urban areas of Bantul Regency. The method used in this research is the water budget method which uses rainfall, evapotranspiration, surface runoff, and groundwater recharge as its parameters. Groundwater recharge is obtained through rainfall, evapotranspiration, and surface runoff. The result showed that the groundwater recharge within the study area has decreased due to the increasing surface runoff. Through policies, land use change can be controlled to decrease the impact of surface runoff and keep the quantity and quality of the groundwater at acceptable levels. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
