Abstrak/Abstract Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are associated with adverse clinical outcomes, including higher rates of morbidity, mortality, extended hospitalizations, and an increased overall cost of healthcare. This study investigated the relationship between PIMs, as specified by Beers Criteria 2019, and the length of stay (LOS) among hospitalized older patients. The study employed a retrospective cohort design, and data was extracted using electronic medical records of older patients. Analysis of the electronic medical records of 146 older patients revealed that 103 patients were administered at least one PIM, indicating a prevalence rate of 70.5%. Females constituted 64.4% of the sample. The most commonly prescribed PIMs were sliding-scale insulin and furosemide, accounting for 43.1% and 28.7% of prescriptions. Statistical analysis revealed that PIMs were significantly associated with LOS, with an odds ratio of 3.730 (95% CI: 1.346-10.337; P=0.008). Furthermore, the multiple logistic regression analysis highlighted the number of prescribed medicines as a predictor for prolonged LOS, with an odds ratio of 2.939 (CI: 4.193-85.244, P=0.000). These results advocate for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare professionals to improve hospitalization outcomes for older patients.
