Cod liver oil (CLO) is one of fish oils commonly used in pharmaceutical and food supplement products. CLO is acknowledged as functional oils due to its capability to provide some health benefit effects. CLO is known as good source of vitamins and essential fatty acids, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids such as eicosapentanoic acid (EPA, 20:5 ω-3) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA, 22:6 ω-3), therefore CLO has high price in the market of fats and oils industry. Some analytical methods for the authentication of CLO has been reported including FTIR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy and chromatographic-based methods. These methods in combination with chemometrics techniques were successful for identification and classification of CLO and CLO adulterated with other animal fats and vegetable oils having lower price than CLO. |
