Sansevieria trifasciata is a herbaceous plant frequently used as a traditional medicine with antibacterial potency against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa is a known bacterial pathogen that often becomes resistant due to its ability to form
biofilms. This study aimed to investigate the potential antibacterial and anti-biofilm activity fraction of S. trifasciata ethanolic extract against P. aeruginosa. Bacterial cell damage with a potential fraction of S. trifasciata ethanolic extract treatment was
observed by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). Anti-biofilm assay applied Microtiter plate 96 wells with crystal violet stain. The MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) results showed that the potential fraction of S. trifasciata ethanolic extract was able to inhibit bacterial growth at a concentration of 4 mg/mL. On this concentration, the potential fraction of S. trifasciata ethanolic extract could inhibit the biofilm by 60%. Identification of compounds by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that Neophytadiene was found to be the main active component. These compounds could act as potential therapeutic agents to
prevent bacterial biofilms and virulence-related infectious diseases.
