English :
Fuji is an Assistant Professor of Sociology specializing in the Sociology of Ethnicity at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from UGM (2012) and a Master’s degree in Anthropology and Development Studies from Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands (2015). Since 2018, he has been engaged in teaching and academic supervision at UGM, including mentoring an undergraduate student from SOAS University of London (2023). He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Interreligious Studies at the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies, a collaborative program of UGM, Sunan Kalijaga Islamic State University, and Duta Wacana Christian University (2023–present). His doctoral research, supervised within the Psychology Faculty of UGM, develops a rigorous examination of mental health within transcultural health sociology, focusing on the intersection of Javanese ethnicity and Buddhist religion and spirituality. His scholarly formation is reinforced by overseas ethnographic experiences across Madagascar, India, the Netherlands, Timor Leste, and the Indochina region, advancing an intersectional approach at the interface of Ethnicity, Interreligious Studies and Sociology of Health. His Madagascar ethnography has been featured in Indonesian national media between 2015 and 2020, including Kompas Sains, CNN Indonesia, Kumparan, Good News From Indonesia, and Geonusantara. In addition, He has established international research collaborations with Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands), Opole University (Poland), National University of Singapore (Singapore), Johns Hopkins University (United States), and the Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
He has published internationally with Springer through Pastoral Psychology, Palgrave Macmillan, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, LabCom – Universidade da Beira Interior (Portugal), Thai Population Association, and the National Library Board of Singapore. His academic trajectory includes participation in workshops at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore (2024, 2025), contribution to a post symposium volume with ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore (2022), and receipt of the Lee Khong Chian Fellowship at the National Library Board of Singapore (2017–2018). He serves as a peer reviewer for Ethnography & Education and the International Journal of Adolescence & Youth published by Taylor & Francis. He has presented at international conferences and symposia across the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. He is also the author of the award winning Javanese novel Kadang Suriname Sanak Merapi (2017), widely used in Indonesian scholarship for its critical ethnohistorical engagement with Dutch postcolonial entanglements, including family reunification (2015) covered by CNN Indonesia.
In parallel, he is professionally engaged in advocacy, applied research, and legal drafting for regional legislative institutions, positioning him as a national government and NGO policy consultant, and serves as an international consultant to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the United Nations Development Programme, Rutgers, The Asia Foundation, ICLD Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, USAID, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, among others.
